We can't wait until the #CIPride23 Parade at 1pm on Saturday 16th September!

We’re absolutely delighted that @teammourant have returned as a sponsor of Pride and that they are sponsoring the parade, which is a cornerstone of the event, and something that many participants look forward to the most!

The parade gets to the heart of why we celebrate: it’s an opportunity for the LGBTQ+ and other minority communities to be visible, without fear, and a reminder that the first Pride was a born from protest, as a march for freedom and equality.

Today's #CIPride23 star Sam gives advice to his younger self that we can all learn from:

"Don't try to be what you think you're supposed to be. There is a reason it's so difficult. It's not your fault, you're not doing anything wrong, it's just... not right. So don't be anyone else. Just be you."

Today's #CIPride23 star is Deputy Louise Doublet.

For the past 9 years, as a Deputy for St Saviour, Louise has been a voice for women, children and marginalised groups in the States Assembly.

In her own words:

"As well as being a (trans-inclusive) feminist I am a person of many identities, including Humanist, bisexual, neurodivergent, a single parent and I live with ‘invisible’ chronic physical health conditions.

"I agreed to take part in this project because I want to give more visibility to the bi+ community (the bi+ umbrella meaning attraction to two or more genders - including pansexual, omnisexual, etc).

"My identity as a queer person is often invisible or erased. Bisexual people are frequently read as straight when they are in a relationship with someone of the opposite sex, and gay/lesbian when in a relationship with someone of the same sex. It is frustrating to not have your real identity acknowledged, or to feel like you don’t belong in queer spaces.

"I am so proud to help promote bi+ visibility, and incredibly grateful to be part of a Jersey Pride that is so inclusive, family-friendly and diverse, where the entire spectrum of LGBTQIA+ identities are celebrated and welcomed."

Today's #CIPride23 star is Marta!

An ally and volunteer for Liberate in Jersey, Marta was the daughter of immigrant parents, and understood the difficulties of facing racist attitudes from an early age.

As an adult, Marta pursued a career as a social worker and later a lay school Chaplin, working most closely with those at the margins of society, who were often invisible or discriminated against.

When her son came out as gay at 17, Marta realised that this was not a lifestyle choice but an acknowledgement of who he really was.

In her own words:

"While my son was navigating this tidal shift in his life, I too had to spend a period of time learning and accepting the challenges my son faced today and in the future through prejudice and discrimination.

"All in all, life’s journey has taught me that it is not about wanting to be something or someone else to fit in, it is about acknowledging who we really are and being who we have been created to be."

"The B is LGBTQ+ isn't silent."

If you've watched Heartstopper or Red, White and Royal Blue over the last weeks then this phrase will resonate. But often Pride and LGBTQ+ campaigns can diminish or erase Bi issues and Bi messages when talking about the challenges faced by our community.

Some people flat out deny that bisexuality exists, or its "just a phase". This is nonsense. Bisexuality is a distinct identity and many in our community have attraction to more than one gender.

Bisexual erasure is a form of stigma. And stigma is bad for health. That goes for both mental and physical health. Evidence suggests that bisexual people have higher rates of anxiety and depression than straight, lesbian, or gay people. And bisexual erasure is a critical potential contributor to those mental health disparities.

This Pride, as we speak up for all the groups that form our fantastic Island community, let us ensure we speak loudly and powerfully for the Bisexual friends, colleagues and allies who have been part of the LGBTQ+ movement since the beginning!

Today's 'Advice to my younger self' comes from #CIPride23 ally Richard Nunn.

Richard and his wife Alice moved to Jersey to lead the Salvation Army six years ago, and have ensured that the organisation on Island has a strong link with Liberate and in fostering diversity, equality and inclusion.

We are so delighted that Richard, Alice and the Salvation Army in Jersey support Pride, having marched in previous Parades and hosted the tea room at Pride 22!

Richard and Alice's message of love, support and welcome should be an inspiration to others in organisations worldwide.

Always Be Proud. Always Be You.

It's a message we sometimes forget. But when we do, it's helpful to be buoyed by the words and insight of others, like today's inspirational #CelebrateYourself model Sam Pearce!

Sam is a bisexual transmasculine non-binary person who uses ‘they’ and ‘he’ pronouns. Sam explained in their own words why being part of the #CIPride23 campaign was important to them:

"Being approached to become involved with this project was amazing. When speaking to the photographer, I mentioned my love of swimming and we decided it would be a great topic to explore.

For a lot of trans people, swimming in public is difficult if not outright impossible; our appearances are under a lot of scrutiny at the best of times, let alone when we’re dressed in skin-tight swimwear. Every time I go for a swim, I must make the conscious choice to embrace my differences and not allow anyone else’s opinions to stop me. I am allowed to take up space in the world, no matter how I present.

I hope that these photos will inspire you to do the things you love, no matter what people say."

Today, as we countdown to #CIPride23 and ask you to #CelebrateYourself, our Pride star is James Thompson! @james__jersey

James is a phenomenal photographer, blogger and the current Chair of Liberate in Jersey, supporting the team in advocating for equality regardless of sexuality, gender, race or disability! In his own words:

"I wanted to be part of this project as having a disability is relatively new to me. It affected my confidence and at times left me feeling different. Being photographed was a way of challenging myself and building my confidence. I’m pleased to say it did. It seemed appropriate for pride, feeling proud of who I am."
